Madison Ballet‘s annual production of “The Nutcracker” has gone without live music for the past three years, a cut made in part to keep the company solvent.
This year, blessedly, an orchestra returns, a subset of the Madison Symphony Orchestra — 43 players, roughly half the usual number — led by maestro John DeMain. The orchestra, with its dynamic range, flexible tempos and capable handling of Tchaikovsky’s lush score lend the production an energy it can find no other way.
