Dracula: A Rock Ballet Returns in October!

(Madison, WI)  Dracula: A Rock Ballet returns to the Capitol Theater at Overture Center for the Arts October 23-26, 2013.  This original production by Madison Ballet debuted last March, and by popular demand has been brought back to launch the company’s 2013-14 season.

Madison Ballet’s steampunk interpretation of the classic Bram Stoker novel is a unique, high-volume mix of rock concert and contemporary ballet.  Dracula breathes new life into the story of the undead, featuring the athletic and dynamic choreography of Artistic Director W. Earle Smith and an original rock score composed by Michael Massey. The innovative set features the seven piece band on the stage above the  dancers.

“This performance was part of my heart and soul for the nearly five years it took to get it on stage,” says W. Earle Smith, Madison Ballet Artistic Director.  “Following its debut last spring, we received such overwhelmingly positive feedback that we brought it back this season.  And of course it’s a perfect fit for the end of October!”

The sets, designed by Jen Trieloff, and costumes, designed by Karen Brown-Larimore, are created in the steampunk style.  Steampunk is a type of science fiction or fantasy set in a world where steam power is still predominant and the style features futuristic technology based on Victorian and Edwardian clothing and culture. Steampunk began as a subculture, but has become popular due to its prevalence in art, film, fashion and music. The steampunk style, coupled with the popularity of vampire and Gothic themed entertainment, make Dracula the ideal production to engage a younger audience than the more traditional works of classical ballet.
